A cup of coffee next to a large pile of coffee beans

True enough, the Pacific Northwest is a major hub of coffee culture. Starbucks itself started in Seattle, and you’ll find countless spots to sip java throughout Portland. It’s only right that you’d honor National Coffee Day later this month; area residents live in “Coffee Central.” You’ll just need to make sure you don’t ruin your oral health amidst the lattes and mochas. To that end, here are four smile-friendly ways to celebrate National Coffee Day in 2026.

National Coffee Day & Its Origins

We Americans love our coffee, but National Coffee Day (NCD) still isn’t widely known. That’s no coincidence; the “holiday” only emerged recently.

NCD honors coffee and its place in American life. Starting in 2005, it’s been marked yearly on September 29th as part of the shift from summer to fall. The day only gained holiday status, though, when the New Orleans’ Southern Food and Beverage Museum gave it that label in 2009. NCD then became a coffee event acknowledged throughout the country.

4 Smile-Friendly Ways to Celebrate NCD

Coffee isn’t great for teeth, whether you have it on National Coffee Day or any other day. Please use the following tips to protect your smile from the celebratory java:

Take Careful Sips

When you drink your coffee, take small and careful sips. Guzzling or swishing it would expose your teeth to tooth-decaying acids, smile-staining compounds, and more. On the other hand, sipping the drink would limit its contact with your enamel.

Drink (and Rinse With) Water

Soon after you’ve had coffee, please drink some water. The latter would rinse smelly residue from your mouth, as well as neutralize acids that can damage teeth. Such effects would thus reduce your risk of cavities and “coffee breath.”

Go Easy on Sweeteners

You shouldn’t load your coffee up with artificial sweeteners. Even as these substances make your drink tasty, they can cause cavities, gum disease, and more when overconsumed. You’re better off sweetening your coffee with healthier alternatives instead.

Stick to Moderation

You mustn’t use NCD as an excuse to drink coffee all day. Consumed over an extended period, this beverage erodes your enamel, makes your teeth sensitive, and stains your smile. You should instead practice moderation, limiting your coffee consumption and being mindful of how much you have.

If you memorize these tips before the 29th, your smile will be ready for National Coffee Day. You can then enjoy some hits of caffeine without fearing for your grin.
